The One Cartoon Character I Love

I’ve always watched cartoons from the time that I was very small. This was before there was cable television and your choices for TV programming were a bit limited. But there was no shortage of cartoons to watch. Even so, I may have had my favorites, back then, but there is only one cartoon character that I have truly fallen in love with and that’s Betty Boop! I guess the reason for this is that she is more than just a cute cartoon character. She represents a sort of independence that you really didn’t see with female cartoon characters years ago.

Back in the old days, female cartoon characters were mostly depicted as objects to be rescued by males and nothing more. This was the case with Olive Oyl in the old Popeye cartoons. In some ways, Olive’s initial attachment to the “bad guys” almost seemed a bit hateful towards women. But not so with Betty Boop. She pretty much relied on her own charms to create the life that she wanted. This was in keeping with the “flapper” mentality that brought new freedom to women in the 20s and 30s. Icons like Clara Bow were, in part, an inspiration for Betty Boop.
